about

This music was played live (excepting some occasional synthesizer overdubs) and was recorded in Cul de Sac's practice space on two tracks of a barely functioning bottom-of-the-line four track cassette recorder. Because of the generally primitive recording quality and conditions, the results contain certain sonic imperfections and distortion, etc. Thanks to Bill Salkin for a sonic clean-up job. If in doubt, consult your dealer. - Chris Guttmacher, San Francisco 1995

From The Wire:

Some people buy records to sound good on their hi-fi; Cul De Sac laugh at such a conceit. I Don't Want To... sounds like it was recorded in a cave with one mic situated at the entrance: it makes its raw predecessor, ECIM, sound sumptuous by comparison. The biscuit tin drums and floods of ancient synths and guitar noise rise out of the murk in a strangely compulsive way. There are affinities with The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray", where everything was so overloaded that the clashing of frequencies produced overtones which hinted at instruments that weren't even there. This semi-improvised, live-in-the-studio set mashes everything together. It's least satisfactory when they all crank up and let fly: all definition is lost in the din, and the tracks are then defined mainly by the drums - delicate rhythms, like Jaki Leibezeit on Can's Tago Mago, becoming funky, four square or sometimes hinting at disintegration. - Dave Morrison, July 1995
