about

This live show from Sunday, August 25th 1991 is the first time the band left the comfy confines of Boston. Here, appearing with the band Upstanding Young Americans and Maneri-Peterson Duo, on a clear 70 degree evening in NYC, we have a soundboard recording of a pretty aggressive performance. The mix is a little funky for the first 60 seconds, but luckily the sound guy figured his stuff out and what you get a is a great sounding show. One other sound note, there are no vocal mics on stage, so the talking between songs is very low. Speaking is likely being picked up from the drum microphone. We decided to leave it in to keep the flow of the show. You can still hear it, it's just faint.

For perspective, Cul de Sac was only a year into their existence and the term "Post-Rock" was still three years away. Also, the release of their debut, ECIM, was a year away in the UK, and two years in the US. Yet, this performance contains two songs that wouldn't be released for 5 years in album form (on China Gate) with Sakhalin and James Coburn, although the 7" of Sakhalin was released the following year in 1992.

The Knitting Factory would almost become a home away from home. In the archives I believe there are more Knitting Factory shows than any other location outside of the Boston area. So here you get to hear Cul de Sac in one of their very first shows, and in my opinion is a special one with great sound.

Hope you enjoy the show!
